Mangrove Restoration
West Coast Sumatra
Why Mangroves
Mangroves are one of natures super plants. Resistance to salt water, they secure land where no other tree can survive. With their elevated root system and mud estuary colonization they form a storm barrier to prevent interior flooding and provide critical shelter and protection zones for a wide range of spawning ocean going fish.
Impact
The impact on regions where the mangroves have been removed is immediate and devastating as storms sweep inland flooding and destroying crops and homes and fish stocks rapidly dwindle without spawning grounds. Fortunately mangroves are one of the most resistant tree species with some of the highest survival rates and require little post planting support.
Community involvement
The community involvement is rewarded two fold. The local community benefits from reliable long term contracts while the mangroves they plant quickly mature to provide protection from storm surges in an increasingly unpredictable planet each year bringing record breaking storms.
Borneo
Kinabatangan Riverine Habitat
Borneo
Mosaic Reforestation
Our Bornean operations focus on mosaic reforestation which is replanting damaged sites along the edges of the Kinabatangan river securing a buffer and helping hold back illegal palm-oil plantation creep.
Impact
The remaining Kinabatangan river jungle habitat is, sadly, a thin thread of the jungle buttressed by kilometers of palm oil, this makes it both especially vulnerable and incredibly rich in wildlife. Any gaps in the forest can effectively halve the available territories for many species and can isolate family groups. We are planting up and replacing these gaps with multi-species reforestation operations.
Community involvement
Green Steps Group is about empowerment, not handouts and the Kinabatangan is a great example where we are supporting the locally owned, locally governed tree planting organization by positioning ourselves as a long term reliable purchase partner.

The right trees in the right place at the right time
In Northern Thailand's varied climate we employ a range of restoration strategies tailored to site characteristics, degradation level, and disturbance regime with a focus on high survival rates and rapid growth.
Impact
Human encroachment has often left areas vulnerable which struggle against invasive vines which quickly overwhelm young trees. Here physically removing the vines by hand - silverculture is back-breaking but essential preparation work, but once this is done - an equal number of naturally grown trees matches the germinated and planted trees.
Community involvement
Agroforestry is an ancient and widely implemented system in the Thai highlands - in this part of the world planting trees is nothing new. Several types of agroforestry systems – living fences, taungya, forest gardens, home gardens, and successional agroforestry. Our role is primarily providing digital tools and platform to help monetize and fund ancient ways.

Cleaning up Tanzania
Dar es Salaam Municipal Council is estimated to produce more than 5,600 tonnes of waste per day. Less than 40% of the waste produced is officially taken to the Pugu dumpsite. The uncollected waste ends up in public places, rivers, roads, water drainage systems, and the ocean.
Community involvement
We are working with local communities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to support our ocean waste recovery campaign. Green Steps  integrates ocean waste recovery impact into your business. Whether it be through creating positive environmental impact through recovering ocean-bound waste or recovering directly from the ocean, we seek action in the right areas and support the local communities while regenerating our amazing beaches, coral beds and diverse marine life.
